Others are donated by owners who can no longer care for them. Upon arrival, horses are coggins tested, dewormed and vaccinated if necessary. They are also evaluated to determine specific needs. Neglected animals often require dental work and/or hoof care. After rehab, the animal is placed up for adoption to a qualified home. Training levels are usually assessed at this time.
The Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation (MHARF) is a non-profit organization that rescues and rehabilitates horses and other animals in need. Many of these animals are seized by authorities from neglectful or abusive situations.
MHARF works with a few different trainers who volunteer their time working with individual animals to better train them before adoption. MHARF is completely run by volunteers. Funding for the animals is received by way of donations or adoption fees. There is no paid staff, so all money received goes directly towards the animals for feed, bedding, vet and farrier care. All donations are tax deductible.
The rescue facility can hold approximately 20 horses and there are currently over 50 animals waiting to be adopted. Qualified adoptive and foster homes are desperately needed at this time. With the arrival of winter, the list of animals waiting to be rescued by MHARF grows by the day.
